State GOPers Craft Wild Gambits To Wriggle Out Of Fed Gun Control Measures

April 5, 2021 5:35 p.m. Faced with a Democratic Congress and White House, Missouri state Sen. Bill White (R) thought long and hard about legislative maneuvers he could pursue to shield his state’s residents from potential new gun laws out of Washington.  Eventually, he settled on a novel approach: Create a new force that residents could volunteer to join a state-sanctioned “minuteman” group to be deployed in emergencies then make those volunteers’ guns state property. That’s right: Want to protect your guns from the government? Give them to your governor.  “What is the one thing the feds don’t really get to regulate?” White told TPM. “Well, that’s our own state property.”

Oversight for a thriving democracy

Recreational team sports have been banned once more owing to a surge in covid19 cases. Photo by Marvin Hamilton - Dr Errol N Benjamin The essence of a thriving democracy is oversight, that is, political action being subject to scrutiny, is the check and balance mechanism that makes it obligatory for politicians to think about the consequences of their utterances and their actions. Oversight is evident in many democracies like in the US where Trump was continuously subject to a majority Democratic Congress and in the UK where even Boris Johnson, despite his overwhelming majority in the House, is still accountable to the opposition. Where democracy is distorted as in Venezuela, or Syria or some African countries, such accountability related to oversight often does not apply.

Demonic origins aside, checks please Biden s evangelical critics

Demonic origins aside, checks please Biden’s evangelical critics By Elise Young and Josh Saul, Bloomberg News Published: April 4, 2021, 9:33am Share: Evangelical Christians and small-government activists, among the fiercest critics of President Joe Biden and the Democratic Congress, are finding solace in $1,400 stimulus checks that some are sharing with churches and political causes. In a January Bible study livestream, Virginia pastor E.W. Jackson said a pair of Georgians headed for the U.S. Senate were “demoniacally possessed” and their fellow Democrats were “cursing” the country by supporting abortion access and gay rights. Newly minted senators Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff were key to Biden’s $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, which passed the evenly divided Senate with no Republican support.

The USA: politics as a business and populism

Image above: Boss Tweed , the leader of the Democratic Party machine in New York City from the 1850s to the 1870s. Two sorts of democracy By Friedrich Engels Friedrich Engels, writing in 1891, saw the USA as an example of the limitations of even the best capitalist democracy. At that time the USA did not even have a sizeable permanent state bureaucracy or standing army. Yet Engels saw a radical difference between the USA’s democracy and the workers’ democracy created in the Paris Commune, when the working class took power in Paris for two months in 1871.
